My daughter is recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrom. I've known for quite some time that she doesn't like shirts that cling to her around her chest, but within the past year she's developed a dislike for denim on her legs. We live in a temperate climate with very cold winters and am at a loss as to what fabric will be comfortable for her but also keep her warm. I would appreciate any suggestions! Thank you!
Probably something soft like a fleece or maybe cotton. Fleece dose tend to stick to itself, that may bother her. Try things that are maybe 1/2 a size too big. I know I don't like things to be fitted. Never have.
My son (age 15 w/Asperger's ) has always has sensitivities to certain fabrics and I only recently discovered that a big part of what bothers him is actually the SEAMS of pants, shirts, etc...they have to be seams that sort of lay "flat" and not protrude or appear "bumpy" and rub up on his skin. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why some cotton shirts or pants were OK and others that appeared to be made of the same fabrics would bother him. Hope this helps...
My daughter is 7 and has tactile sensitivity as well. She has never worn a pair of jeans! We moved from FL to NC where last year she experienced her first winter and it was AWFUL.
What we found worked was sweatpants. I also add a cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle to help make the fabric as soft as possible. Sometimes sweat pants pill on the inside when they're washed, and my dd can't handle that. She is sensitive to the seams for sure but also the feel of the fabric itself. She doesn't wear buttons, collars, any fabric other than knits.
For socks we buy a brand we found a Kohls that are "seamless" and work well. both my kids have sock sensitivities. We don't do turtlenecks but I rely on layers. A typical winter outfit might include sweat pants or sometimes leggings under sweatpants; seamless socks; fur-lined crocs; a t shirt, warm jacked or sweater, and a coat. I'm lucky to get her in mittens and a hat :(
Try getting some clothes from Hanes. They sell some seamless and tagless clothing. Both my son's have issue with certain clothing. Try thermal leggings and match the shirts to them. Hanes has done wonders for my son. He use to strip of his clothes if they offend him.. Since I changed his shirts, underpants, and sweats he is fine. As for jeans in the beginning only elastic jeans would work because they don't conform to the legs or waist and added extra detergent helped too. Hopefully these suggestions help you.
I'm 18 years old and I have a denim sensitivity problem too. I tend to pick at my pants when I get nervous if the pants that I wear are jeans. I prefer to wear sweatpants or chino pants which are made from a different fabric than denim. I also have been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome.
