Please email me if you like. We have only been diagnosed and in OT for about 4 months, but we've been struggling with this for about 3 years and lots of bad advice. You don't say how old Ashley is, but our meltdowns much improved around age 4, and...

OH Que, I am so sorry I just saw this post rather than last fall. My son did this with my bathrobe sash, jacket ties, etc. I was so afraid, too. He was older and understood that it was not okay to do this. But he is six now and still does it some....

When the way a person interprets or processes information from their senses interferes with learning and daily routines, it is considered Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD).

I had this mini tramp in the garage for years, but they are all over the place in used sports equipment stores. We've gone through two, $3 Bop Bags (Wal-mart), too. My son has the need for deep sensory input in his tummy and hands. Next, I'm going...

My first-grader can't stand music class--all those little bodies crowded on to unstable risers with 20 little voices all singing off-key and at different pace, not to mention the very loud piano. Yikes. Not sure I could either. I have asked my scho...

Good for you, if we don't look out for our kids noone else will. And yes I would have been offended as well. I think your son is a smart little boy and I loved the "you don't have a brain in your head!"

I may have heard this on this site, but it has helped with my six-year-old, and would really be great for all kids. You can make (or buy--there's a great one from Melissa and Doug I got at a consignment shop) a chart for the morning and the evenin...

How do sensory disorders affect your life?
My biggest challenge is educating teachers and caregivers about sensory issues (not to mention family members).
We are working with a wonderful teacher and resource teacher right now who get it. But that hasn't been our case in the past.
We had a terrible first semester Kindergarten teacher whose teacher-centric classroom was out of control and my child ended up under the table some days. She didn't get it AT ALL. Unfortunately, she is still teaching at that very expensive private kindergarten. All we had to do was find a smaller class with a lovely teacher who really saw his gifts and things turned around tremendously.
About Me:
I'm a mom and a writer trying to bring more attention to the less severe types of disabilities that challenge sensory sensitive children. My husband and I always say that if he had more obvious disabilities, people would fall all over themselves to be seen helping out, but sensory integration issues are more subtle and the behaviors they evoke are not very well understood by others.
